In combat the challenge and fun was in trying to identify your enemy's designs and look for weak points (under time pressure because you were being shot), and decide if you were going to go for their pilot seat, disable weapons first or maybe disable propulsion or even try to break it in half. The ideal build was compact, isolated all of your key blocks into triforced 'modules' and had outer layers that couldn't be penetrated to your drivers seat without the entire outer layers first having to be peeled away like an onion (due to smart triforcing). This meant you could spend hours and hours optimizing your builds (trying each iteration in combat to find flaws in your design) to be as resilient as possible. There was a concept of 'triforcing' where you designed multi layered armored that used angled blocks to selectively route damage away from or around key blocks (hardpoint blocks for weapons, your driver's seat, key structural blocks, wheel/propulsion bases). It paid off to put thought into your designs to ensure there were no obvious paths for enemy weapons to 'drill' through to your core or to connection points that would shear off entire parts of the vehicle when broken. You mixed and matched different tier blocks to get the most efficient design.
